A Safe School
Imagine you are a student going to a public school in the middle of Georgia. You’re a transgender boy who is entering sophomore year. Every class you hear your old name called by the teachers and the people who were your friends until you came out. You aren’t even thinking about school because you’re focusing on drowning out the jibes and comments from around you and not going to the bathroom because you aren’t comfortable in the girls bathroom and the school won’t let you go to the boys bathroom. So then you fall behind and don’t learn what you are expected to learn in highschool so your grades drop and so it continues. That night you cry about the bullying and your grades so you don’t have time to do your homework. Now you are behind on homework and too stressed to catch up and it’s only the first week. This is the life of thousands and thousands of high school students who are part of the LGBT community.
It is the mission of Saga Academy to provide a safe environment for students who may be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or gender non-conforming to live and learn successfully. All students deserve to learn in a physically, emotionally and mentally safe space, and live in a residence that is supportive of the whole student and the student’s needs as an individual and as a community.
